Tell me about spider veins

Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin, often forming fine red, blue, or purple lines. They commonly develop on the legs and face and are caused by increased pressure within superficial veins or weakened vessel walls. While typically a cosmetic concern, they may occasionally be associated with mild discomfort such as burning or itching.

Treatment focuses on closing or reducing the appearance of these vessels. Sclerotherapy uses targeted injections to collapse the veins, while laser treatments apply focused light energy to break them down. Both approaches allow the body to gradually reabsorb the treated vessels, improving skin appearance over time.

Symptoms of spider veins include:

  • Visible fine red, blue, or purple veins near the surface of the skin
  • Mild aching, burning, or throbbing in the legs
  • Itching or irritation around the veins
  • Leg fatigue, especially after prolonged standing
  • Slight swelling in the lower legs or ankles
